Following the appointment of Professor Dong-ke Zhang, FTSE, as Professor of Chemical Engineering at Curtin University of Technology in 1999, Curtin’s research activities in the areas of combustion, energy, fuel processing, applied catalysis, emission control and environmental technology have significantly increased. In order to more effectively promote the research expertise to the industry in WA and this region, it was considered necessary to establish a University research centre that can produce impact and serve to attract research funding from governments and the industry. The proposal to establish such a research centre, Centre for Fuels and Energy, Western Australia, abbreviated as CFE, was approved by the Curtin University Council in September 2000. Professor Zhang was appointed the inaugural Director of CFE.

As a linchpin figure, Professor Dong-ke Zhang, FTSE, successfully united the Western Australian coal and power industry (Western Power, Wesfarmers Coal and Griffin Coal) to participate in a major national initiative in the establishment of the Cooperative Research Centre for Coal in Sustainable Development (CCSD), involving governments, coal industry, universities and CSIRO from WA, NSW and Queensland. CFE becomes the research arm of CCSD in WA.

Centre for Fuels, Energy and Environmental Technology, Western Australia was renamed Centre for Fuels and Energy in February 2002.
